World Teachers’ Day calls for the empowerment of teachers to build sustainable societies.

Teacher’s Day in India

National Teachers Day is celebrated in different day in many countries as a special holiday dedicated to honoring teachers for their contributions. Hence it is also known as the “National Teacher Appreciation Day”. The date of the holiday varies from country to country. September 5th is celebrated as the “Teachers Day” in India every year. It is a day to remember Dr Sarvepally Radhakrishnan, the second President of Indian Republic. His birthday being the 5th of September, the day is celebrated in his honor as the teacher’s day in the country.

The beginning goes like this. After Dr. Radhakrishnan was elected as the President of India in 1962, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday. He said, “instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if Sept 5th is observes as a Teachers’ Day”. Govt of India also recognized this and there after 5th of September became the “Teacher’s Day”.

Teachers build the mind of young and old. They must be the best to give the best to the nation. It is considered as a noble profession and is respected irrespective of the caste, status, gender or education. Rich and poor, young and old, or of any degree, people do respect their teachers.

During this day all people remember their teachers and honor them in various ways. In Indian heritage the “guru-shishya” (teacher-student) relations is life-long. One person always is a student till his death, commonly worded as “Aajeevan Vidhyarthi” (– Life Long Student) . On Teacher's Day, students, across the nation honor the teachers and gurus in their lives by sending good wish cards, holding programs in their schools and colleges, honoring teachers and educators with mementos and prizes, including paying tributes through social media.

In India teachers are also remembered on the day of “Guru Poornima”, which falls on a full moon night in the month of July . In 2017 it was on July 7th. This guru poornima day everyone offers obedience to their teachers. Maharishi Ved Vyasa, who wrote the four vedas ( Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda) is considered as the first guru and many Hindus and Buddhists offer Pooja and tributes in his name.
