New Crisis in Indian Maritime Man Power

One of the crisis sprouting in the maritime circle is the loss of percentage of Indian seafarer engagement in the world shipping. are we losing out to other seafaring nations. The readings says so.

India with its 1.3 billion people, only provides seven percent of the 1,647,500 seafarers engaged in international shipping, while the Philippines with a smaller population of 100 million supplies 20 percent. Last week, 11th of august, I read the article on Economic times which quotes:

" Indian ships saw a sharp decline in their share in carriage of country's overseas trade while about half of the domestic shipping fleet is aged, Economic Survey said today. " As per the survey, around 410 ships of 15.79 million DWT cater to India's overseas trade and the rest to coastal trade.

On the national policy side, it showed, ""There has been a sharp decline in the share of Indian ships in the carriage of India's overseas trade from about 40 per cent in the late 1980s to 7 per cent in 2015-16," the volume II of the Survey tabled in Parliament said.

Is it showing further decrease?

On the manpower side everyone is worried about the decline in their employment.

I feel it is already delayed to look into the solutions, but cannot wait further.

The entire issue is pivoting on the matter of 2 Qs.

1. The Quantity of seafarers available

2. The Quality of them

International markets dictates the second issue, while the first one is the national issue. I am not forgetting the importance of quality and employability of Indian seafarers. It is of prime importance and need to continuously addressed.

Now let us start looking the elements in each of the above two. Ponder, Ponder and Respond......to me at trgsolutions.international@gmail.com or directly to jkmnair@gmail.com
